Originally founded as an agricultural town by the Anacona indigenous people and Spanish settlers in the 18th century. In 1903 it became a corregimiento of Envigado and, after community organization, became a municipality on January 1, 1968. It ceased to be a rural town around 2000, transforming into a modern city with high urban density.
Located 14 km south of Medellín, in the Aburrá Valley, Sabaneta covers only 15 km², of which 67% is urban. It borders Envigado, Itagüí, La Estrella and Caldas.
